Metonymy and Metaphor: Boundary Cases and the Role of a Generative Lexicon
نویسنده
چکیده
Recent advances in language technologies in areas such as information extraction (MUC1), question answering (TREC2), and summarization (DUC3) have explored extensively the power of statistical NLP in the age of ready availability of large, annotated datasets. Groundbreaking efforts of organizers of these and other continued shared tasks in the spirit of shared resources drive to make developed tools robust and available to the community. We can rely thus on annotated corpora (LDC),4 taggers (Brill 1995; Hepple 2000) and parsers (Grinberg et al. 1995; Briscoe et al. 2006), and development environments such as GATE (Cunningham 2002) which comes with extensive word lists for named entity recognition and partial analysis tools, such as date grammars, etc. The overall goal is not to understand and represent the meaning of texts in an application-neutral way, but to “get at” bits of information hidden in textual documents and extract as many of them as possible for a particular application, leading to partial analysis methods. While partial “syntactic” analysis (phrase chunking, tagging, etc.) has been a mainstay, partial semantic techniques are still in their infancy, with the notable exception of word sense disambiguation (Edmonds and Kilgarriff 2003), annotation and normalization of temporal information (Verhagen et al. 2005), the detection of

Metonymy and Relevance
The aim of this paper is to reconsider the phenomena traditionally treated as cases of metonymy and to suggest a way of accounting for their production and comprehension. In the first half of the paper I critically review some previous attempts to deal with metonymy. I focus in particular on the classical approach, the associationist approach and the Gricean approach. The main point of my criti...
متن کاملMetaphorical Conceptualization of SPORT Through TERRITORY as a Vehicle
WAR as a vehicle and Sport Is War as a conceptual metaphor (CM) seem inadequate to account metaphorically for SPORT. To cater for an inclusive vehicle/CM, we selected WIN and LOSS lexicon from the news coverage of Brazil’s football team loss to Germany and tested them through the Corpus of Contemporary American English. Then, the data were studied through the 3 stages of metaphor research. In t...
متن کاملA Stylistic Analysis of Lexicon in Ray Bradbury’s The Martian Chronicles
Ray Bradbury’s The Martian Chronicles is a futuristic, science fiction novel that chronicles the colonization of Mars by humans, projecting the United States’ colonial and immigrant past on to a symbolic future. Bradbury’s use of language is mostly picturesque and sensory. The present paper applies a text-oriented analysis of stylistic elements that construct meaning in the text and evoke the n...
متن کاملVarying Cardinality in Metonymic Extensions to Nouns
Meaning shifting phenomena such as metonymy have recently attracted increasing interest of researchers. Though these phenomena have been addressed by plenty of computational methods, the impacts of cardinalities of metonymically related items have been widely ignored in all of them. Motivated by this lack of analysis, we have developed a method for representing expectations and knowledge about ...
